THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM OF MONTSERRAT ROCA I BALTÀ

Xavier de la Cruz will present the exhibition “THE CHILDREN OF THE REPUBLIC AT THE IGNASI IGLÉSIAS SCHOOL (1931-1939)”, which he carried out as a result of documentary research in order to produce the book Ignasi Iglésias (1871- 1928). The validity of a forgotten myth, the historian Manel Martín Pascual and the photographer Xavier de la Cruz i Sala discovered in the collection Ignasi Iglésias, deposited in the Historical Archive of the City of Barcelona by Emiliana Vinyes i Miquel, widow of the playwright, a photo album.

This album was a gift from Montserrat Roca i Baltà, then director of the Ignasi Iglésias Municipal School, to the writer’s widow. Dated 1935, but with previous images, it contains a set of photographs of the school and the farmhouse that houses it. However, the most interesting images are the last ones, as they are made by someone experienced in professional photography and show us the daily life of children during their stay at school: playing basketball, caring and working in the garden, doing outdoor classes —outdoors—, doing gymnastics, playing …
